Imagine a place...
where all you can hear is the
wind in the trees, the songs of birds, the hum of bees, and the sound of
cows and sheep… A place bathed in sunshine with old fashioned roses
growing up its walls and swathes of lavender, potager gardens filled
with herbs and summer vegetables, beautiful rural views with not another
house in sight….but only 15 or 20 minutes to a bustling city with a
wealth of cafes, restaurants, theatres and cinemas, yacht marina,
galleries and shopping!
Nestled on a bend of the Mangere
River amongst groves of native Totara trees lies Riverdale Farm, a small
beef farm of 35 acres. Follow the line of poplar trees as you wind
your way down our driveway, crossing babbling streams and passing
through a thicket of trees, to arrive at the Farmhouse. Built in the
French country style, the house lies to the north and is filled with
sunshine. It’s so extremely peaceful and private that you may never want
to leave!
The birdlife here is wonderfully
rich and varied - greenfinches, sparrows, thrushes, blackbirds,
kingfishers, chaffinches, spotted and ring-necked doves, fantails,
goldfinches, starlings, Indian Mynahs, rosellas, and wax eyes are all
regular visitors to the garden. You may be lucky enough to spot a
tomtit, yellowhammer, tui, Californian Quail or Shining Cuckoo. A
wander through the fields can reveal white faced heron, harrier hawks,
plovers, Australian magpies, the river shag, pukeko, pheasant, skylarks
and several types of duck. Recent sightings of the rare NZ long
tailed bat here at Riverdale are very exciting - confirming the presence
of a colony in the area.
Take a walk across farmland to
visit the beautiful Mangere falls and indulge in some peace and solitude
at the delightful award-winning private chapel. In season help
yourself to our orchard fruit – mostly old heirloom varieties, grown
without sprays or chemicals. Stroll in the olive grove - walk by the
river, or just sit in the sun and unwind. Bird-life is everywhere, and
remember to keep an eye on your window in the early morning to watch the
hares browse by. Welcome to Riverdale!
